Internship Overview

Southface Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Atlanta, Georgia with a satellite headquarters in Sarasota, Florida, is leading the way toward a sustainable, equitable, and healthy built environment for all. Since 1978, our programs have closed the gap between environmental awareness and action by promoting scalable resource efficiency and clean energy solutions for homes, workplaces, and communities.

As a Southface intern, you will play an active role in our mission while gaining valuable knowledge and experience to begin a career in sustainability.

Southface Advocacy

Our advocacy work is organized across three interconnected themes of climate resiliency: energy justice, green affordable housing, and local climate action. We accomplish this work through community engagement; technical assistance in clean energy and energy efficiency solutions; policy and regulatory advocacy; and partnerships with stakeholders at local, state, and regional scales. Our work aims to:

  • Democratize energy policy- and decision-making within and across state and local jurisdictional boundaries for marginalized and underrepresented communities, organizations, and voices.
  • Promote and expand renewable energy and energy efficiency as resources central to climate resiliency, equity, and justice.
  • Contribute conceptually and technically to the most efficient, impactful, and integrated use of both federal and state funding and programs to support energy justice, affordable housing, and local climate action.

Intern Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or certificate program in the field of engineering, environmental sciences, architecture, or sustainability.
  • Organized, with strong analytical skills.
  • Understanding and/or passion for sustainability, resource efficiency, energy, climate change, resiliency, political science, or environmental justice and equity.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with mapping software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and data collection a plus.
  • Ability to work an average of 20-40 hours per week from August 22 - December 15.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Organize and convene advocate coalitions working on energy democratization, environmental justice, regulatory and policy, and sustainability in the U.S. South.
  • Assist policy research on energy justice, green affordable housing, and local climate action across Georgia and Florida.
  • Technical assistance with projects, for example, utility-scale energy efficiency programming; amendments to building codes; renewable energy deployment for residential, commercial, and government applications; and decarbonization and climate resiliency plans for local cities and municipalities.
  • Prepare materials, memos, and/or reports for legislative and regulatory engagement.
  • Support community and coalition outreach, awareness, and education engagements through resource and curriculum development.

Further and more detailed responsibilities will be tailored to fit the backgrounds and interests of successful candidates.

Physical Requirements

May require visits to a construction site; walking; reaching; bending; ability to lift 20 pounds.

Hours of Work

Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with flexible options. Occasional weekend or evening hours.
