Sample Director, Residential Programs Job Description

Director, Residential Programs

Director, Residential Programs

Organizational Overview

Southface Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, is leading the way toward a sustainable, equitable and healthy built environment for all. Since 1978, our programs have closed the gap between environmental awareness and action by promoting scalable resource efficiency and clean energy solutions for homes, workplaces and communities. Our practice of regenerative placemaking amplifies real-world strategies to create a built environment where the synergy between ecological and human needs supports health and well-being while creating resilient, equitable and thriving communities, striving to achieve a low-carbon future.

Team Overview

Southface's programs identify gaps in the marketplace and bring innovative solutions that align with the Southface mission, addressing issues around water conservation, energy efficiency and sustainable building operations. We are committed to ensuring all have access to efficient, healthy residential spaces that support their well-being and human potential. Over the years, Southface has developed a suite of programs to address issues that can be moved both through market forces as well as those issues that are immune to market forces, like our deteriorating, unhealthy and inefficient public housing stock, and we continue to innovate to maximize our impact.

We are seeking a Director to help align, create and grow the sub-programs under one consolidated umbrella, with a coherent strategy and theory of change to guide and increase our impact. This position will lead teams from across our residential programs, including EarthCraft, Southface Energy Rated Homes (SERH), the Care and Conserve Plumbing Repair Program (CCPRP), and the Health and Efficiency in Residential Environments (HERE) program.

Position Overview

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and oversee a cohesive long-term vision and strategy for Southface's residential programs.
  • Lead and collaborate with the Residential team to implement programs to ensure maximum impact, individually and collectively, and evaluate results and execute changes to programs, in a continuous improvement model in partnership with program leads.
  • Contribute to organizational growth through development of new programs in the Residential sector that support the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Seek new and manage existing partnerships, including with local and state-led Housing Authorities, HUD, USDA, municipalities, developers and other nonprofit partners that amplify our impact and advance our mission.
  • Collaborate across the organization to further our mission and vision including, but not limited to the policy team to drive policies that advance total affordability (the creation, retrofit and operation of healthy, efficient and quality housing); the Research team to conduct and report on research at the nexus of resource efficiency and health; and the development and communications team to develop, implement and manage program marketing strategies to increase brand awareness.
  • Represent Southface as a subject matter expert in this work at conferences, panels and thought leadership forums.
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning activities and be an active and collaborative member of the Southface Senior Leadership Team.
  • This role reports to the President and currently has 2-3 direct reports.
  • Hire, train, develop and appraise direct reports.

The successful applicant for the position will meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, architecture, business management, or related field (Master's degree is strongly preferred)
  • Ten+ years of experience in residential development, program or executive management in a related organization or a related role. Experience in the public housing sector preferred but not required
  • Experience managing a diverse team with a complex budget
  • Residential (single and multifamily) development and operational knowledge; familiarity with green building programs such as EarthCraft and healthy housing practices and materials is preferred
